Shadow Pensions Minister reportedly resigns

Shadow Pensions Minister, Gill Furniss, has resigned from the role after less than eight months in the position, according to reports.

First reported by CityWire New Model Adviser, Furniss has decided to step down due to personal reasons, a Labour Party spokesperson told the publication.

Furniss has been the MP for Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough since 2016 and was appointed as Shadow Pensions Minister in September 2023.

As part of the Labour Party reshuffle, she took over the role from Labour MP for Reading East, Matt Rodda, who held the position between 2021 and 2023.

Prior to taking over the role of Shadow Pensions Minister, Furniss was Shadow Minister for Transport.

Writing on Twitter, LCP partner and former Pensions Minister, Steve Webb, said that the appointment of her replacement would be a “key decision”, as they would likely be the next Pensions Minister if Labour come to power at the next election.

Earlier this year, the Labour Party published its Plan for Financial Services paper, which revealed that it would undertake an in-government pensions and retirement savings review if the party is elected.

Labour stated that it would review the current state of the pensions and retirement savings landscape to assess whether the current framework would deliver sustainable retirement incomes.
